Processing Stabilization of Polyolefin Recyclates Using Alditols in Combination With α ‐Tocopherol: A Sustainable Alternative to Phosphites

ABSTRACT This study introduces a novel bio‐based stabilizer system for polyolefin recyclates that combines alditols with small amounts of α ‐tocopherol as a sustainable alternative to conventional phosphite additives. The aim of this work is to evaluate the synergistic stabilization of alditols with α ‐tocopherol and to benchmark their performance against conventional phosphite systems under multiple extrusion in various polyolefin recyclates. Compared to industrial standards and state‐of‐the‐art recycling stabilizers, the new formulations demonstrate superior performance particularly in melt stability, oxidation resistance, and retention of molecular weight during multiple extrusion in various recycled polyolefin grades. Clear synergistic effects between the stabilizer components were observed supported by mechanistic considerations. Hexanehexol‐based systems showed the best overall performance among the alditol derivatives. The results highlight a promising pathway toward greener additive technologies that support sustainable recycling and processing of polyolefin recyclates. Overall, the combination of alditols with α ‐tocopherol alongside established antioxidants provides a robust and environmentally compatible strategy for advancing sustainable stabilization of recycled polyolefins.
