Review on multiport dual active bridge converters for integration of renewable energy sources

The growing demand for integration of renewable energy sources into modern power systems necessitates efficient and flexible power electronic interfaces. Multiport converters (MPCs) have arisen as a viable solution for the integration of various energy sources, storage systems, and loads within a single power processing stage. Multiport converters based on the Dual Active Bridge (DAB) architecture have gained significant attention due to their inherent galvanic isolation, soft-switching capability, and bidirectional power flow. This review offers an extensive analysis of DAB based multiport converter topologies highlighting their structural variations. Modifications done to the conventional DAB structure for facilitating multiport operation in various multi-input, multi-output and hybrid topologies are detailed. The modulation and control strategies employed are discussed in terms of their performance and complexity. Review also emphasizes the practical considerations, recent advancements and future opportunities in the multiport DAB converters which would be helpful for the design of new topologies.
