Exploring the Yield Potential of Urochloa spp. Cultivars in Crop–Livestock Systems Under Different Fertilization Strategies

There are several forage cultivars available for use in crop–livestock systems, and their selection is crucial for system success. This study evaluated the performance of different Urochloa spp. cultivars, established after Glycine max and Sorghum bicolor , under two fertilization strategies applied to the grass. The treatments consisted of Urochloa brizantha cultivars (Paiaguas and Brauna) and Urochloa spp. hybrids (Ipyporã, Mulato, Mavuno, Sabia, and Cayana), subjected to maintenance (N, K, S, and micronutrients, respectively, 50, 50, 20, and 3.2 kg ha −1 year −1 ) and moderate fertilization (150, 150, 40, and 6.4 kg ha −1 year −1 ). The hybrids (Cayana, Ipyporã, Mavuno, Mulato, and Sabia) exhibited the highest proportion of leaf forage mass, improving forage quality. Mulato had the highest crude protein content and lowest fiber concentrations. Under moderate fertilization management, Brauna showed the highest forage production during the rainy season, reaching 11.15 Mg ha −1 . Moderate fertilization promoted increases in crude protein content compared to maintenance fertilization. In the dry season, Ipyporã and Mavuno demonstrated greater resilience through extended leaf lifespan. Based on the findings of this study, it can be inferred that the Brauna cultivar is the best commercial grass option for moderate fertilization and Mulato is the best option for high‐quality forage.
