Sites of Memory and Youth on Screen: Sebastian Brameshuber's Und in der Mitte, da sind wir (2014)

Abstract: The 2014 documentary Und in der Mitte, da sind wir , directed by Austrian filmmaker Sebastian Brameshuber, follows three teenagers in the Upper Austrian town of Ebensee over a period of ten months, exploring their daily lives and their attitudes towards living near the site of a former concentration camp. Brameshuber uses associative filmmaking techniques and a visual language of liminality, closely associated with adolescence, to offer two very different stories using a sequence of the same images: one, a pessimistic comment on the failure of meaningful Holocaust education; the other a hopeful view of the possibilities for a better future.
