The effect of a healthy lifestyle educational intervention based on the BASNEF model on premenstrual syndrome symptoms in female middle school students

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common issue among adolescent girls that can negatively affect their academic performance and quality of life. This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the impact of a lifestyle educational intervention based on the BASNEF model on PMS symptoms in 182 female middle school students in Shiraz. The intervention group received four 45-minute hybrid (in-person and virtual) sessions on PMS, the Mediterranean diet, physical activity, and relaxation techniques, along with a virtual session for parents. Data were collected before and two months after the intervention. Results showed significant improvements in knowledge, BASNEF constructs, depression, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (P <0.05). However, no significant changes were observed in anxiety, stress, or physical activity. The intervention significantly reduced PMS severity, highlighting its potential as a cost-effective strategy in schools.
