Effect of Timing Interval Between Electric Detonators on Through Bulkhead Initiator Reliability

This study investigates the enigmatic one-channel misfire phenomenon in dual-channel Through Bulkhead Initiators (TBIs), a critical issue with potential implications for the reliability of precise detonation systems. In a setup where channels are separated by only 10 mm to ensure redundancy, intermittent nonignition in one channel presents a unique technical challenge. Despite extensive environmental testing, only minimal donor charge degradation was observed, and the issue proved difficult to replicate consistently. Electric current analysis suggested that near-simultaneous initiations might be a contributing factor. Using high-speed imaging and dent tests, the authors examined the potential for detonation products to interfere when function times differ slightly, shedding light on the intricate interplay of timing and spatial effects in high-stakes detonation reliability. These insights underscore the complexities of microtiming variations and their broader implications for system dependability in critical applications.
