An analysis of factors influencing intention and execution of apheresis platelet donation among undergraduate medical students following awareness drive

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Platelet donation, vital for critical patients, often faces neglect and shortages. Apheresis donation, though time-intensive, is crucial in modern therapy. For successful awareness drives to promote platelet donation, effective doctor communication and addressing donor concerns are needed. This study analyzes factors influencing platelet donation intentions in medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at a tertiary health center in North India. A structured questionnaire was given to 400 undergraduate medical students to assess their knowledge, attitude, and practice with respect to platelet donations, followed by platelet awareness drive to educate students. Postintervention assessment was done using the same questionnaire. Statistical analysis was done using the SPSS software. RESULTS: Out of 400 participants, 62.3% were unaware of platelet apheresis donation. Preawareness drive, 55.2% were willing to donate, which increased to 64% postdrive, showing a significant difference. Awareness of donation safety rose from 46.2% to 78.7%, and knowledge of eligibility criteria improved from 13.8% to 73.5%, both statistically significant. Most participants (93%) believed awareness drives motivate society, with a slight increase to 94.5% postdrive. Willingness to register as donors increased significantly from 38.5% to 49.5% after the intervention. CONCLUSION: Undergraduate medical students showed significant improvement in their knowledge about platelet apheresis after an awareness drive, with most displaying a positive attitude towards donations. Improving access to donation opportunities and creating awareness could encourage more people to donate platelet.
