(PNM-15) Listening to bodies, building pleasure: care and sexuality in intersex people

Abstract Introduction / Objective The sexuality of intersex people remains largely invisible both in healthcare and in sexual education. Many of these individuals undergo traumatic medical interventions and face emotional and relational difficulties that directly impact their experience of sexual pleasure. This study aims to reflect on the care of sexual pleasure in intersex people, considering their physical, emotional, and social specificities, through a clinical case study and an interdisciplinary theoretical framework. Materials and Methods The study was carried out at the Human Sexuality Outpatient Clinic of Faculdade Santa Casa, Belo Horizonte, through a clinical case study involving an intersex person. The methodology combined case analysis with an interdisciplinary literature review in the fields of sexuality, mental health, and intersex studies. Results The case analysis showed that specialized psychological support, combined with sensitive and non-judgmental listening, is essential for rebuilding the individual’s connection with their own body and sexual pleasure. Communication based on informed consent and the safe exploration of sexuality were identified as key elements for sexual autonomy. The case also highlighted the importance of inclusive sexual education and access to healthcare professionals trained to address intersex specificities. Conclusions The care of sexual pleasure in intersex people requires a comprehensive approach, centered on respecting individual specificities and fostering a welcoming and validating space. The clinical case presented reaffirms the need for clinical and educational practices that value active listening, consent, and emotional support. Public policies, professional training, and access to qualified information are fundamental pillars to ensure that pleasure and care are recognized as rights for all people, regardless of their corporeality.
