(PNM-04) Sexual discrepancy: is it a problem or an everyday occurrence?

Abstract Introduction Discrepancies regarding sexual desire in heterosexual couples are a common reason for consultation in sexual medicine. We propose an update on the topic and provide suggestions for treatment. Methods We reviewed recent literature on sexual desire discrepancies in heterosexual couples. Results The literature mentions factors linked to a lack of communication, disagreement over the distribution of household tasks, mental strain, as well as factors related to age and the type of relationship. Many men perceive their desire as spontaneous and complain about their partners’ lack of availability and sexual spontaneity. On the other hand, many women perceive their sexual desire as responsive or secondary to emotional intimacy and closeness with their partners. These differences, which often go unspoken, lead to conflict and dissagreement between partners, who don’t understand each other’s behavior and interpret their actions as rejection or lack of affection. The article mentions how experience shows that sexual pleasure and quality can fluctuate over time, even among couples who have sex fairly regularly. While some couples accept these fluctuations, others perceive them as a threat to the continuity of the relationship. Conclusions Couples go through different stages in their sexual and relationship lives. Supporting them during this stage is essential to foster honest and respectful dialogue that leads to satisfactory sexuality. Financing No conflict.
