(PNM-06) Group psychotherapy in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions: barriers and perspectives in the Brazilian context

Abstract Introduction/Aim International literature has consistently demonstrated robust evidence regarding the effectiveness of group psychotherapy in the treatment of female sexual dysfunctions (FSD). Nevertheless, in Brazil, its application remains incipient. This study aims to reflect on the factors that limit the implementation of this therapeutic modality in the country. Methods Drawing on the experience of conducting an online psychotherapeutic group with Brazilian women presenting FSD and/or sexual issues, combined with findings from a previously conducted systematic review, we discuss the barriers and opportunities for expanding the use of therapeutic groups. Results Despite its clinical effectiveness and the potential for optimizing healthcare resources, the practical application of this approach in Brazil remains limited. Identified barriers include: predominantly individual-focused clinical training of professionals; lack of awareness regarding scientific evidence on group interventions; feelings of insecurity in conducting group sessions; and the absence of clinical guidelines specifically addressing female sexuality treatment. Conclusions Expanding the availability of psychotherapeutic groups for FSD and sexual issues in the Brazilian context depends on structural changes in professional training, broader dissemination of existing evidence, and greater investment in public policies that value collective interventions as a strategy for sexual health care.
