Real-world insights into M-TEER: Lessons from the Polish National Experience
Mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) has become an established treatment option for patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) who remain symptomatic despite guideline-directed medical therapy.Randomized trials have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of this therapy in carefully selected populations, while observational registries continue to play a crucial role in defining its effectiveness in routine clinical practice and across different healthcare systems. In this issue of the Polish Heart Journal, Wojakowski et al. [1] provide important clinical insights into the national application of M-TEER in Poland.A total of 1204 patients underwent M-TEER between 2019 and 2023.There was a high prevalence of comorbidities in the study population, with 82.3% of patients having coronary artery disease, 93.9% heart failure (HF), 91.0% hypertension, 43.9% diabetes mellitus, 50.9% dyslipidemia, and 70.9% atrial fibrillation. The in-hospital mortality rate was 3%.At one-year, all-cause mortality was 15%, and HF hospitalization reached 55%.
