Analyses of waste char as an adsorbent- Insight into pyrolysis

Environmental threats such as soil contamination, ground water pollution and air pollution are the effects because of the huge generation of wastes from different industries and urban resources. Therefore, waste management has become an important issue. An effective waste management includes prevention, reuse, recycling, recovery, and disposal of waste. Several technological approaches have been explored to attain any one of the processes, when Waste to energy (WTE) nowadays is a well-accepted term in material fabrication. Pyrolysis is one of such promising technologies, which can produce three different types of fuel such as, pyro-oil, char, and gases from solid or liquid wastes. The pyro char can be used as a good adsorbent towards the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this present study, the method towards the preparation of char material through pyrolysing waste printed circuit board (PCB) was explored, following which the char produced was used for dye adsorption from water. So far the studies made to adsorb Pb(II) using char obtained from PCB pyrolysis is one of the topic of interests on which not much researches have been done. Hence the present study char was prepared through pyrolysis of PCB at 5500C followed by the characterization of the adsorbent and its isotherm assessment. Batch adsorption of Pb(II) was done with the synthetic solution for different adsorbent load and initial Pb(II) concentration. 24% of the Pb(II) was removed at 0.02 g of char per mg of Pb(II), which was increased to 60% for prolonged batch hours of 3h.
