Integrated Vertical Evacuation Planning Using Open Street Map and Floor Field Model: A Case Study of Osaka, Japan

We created a map of Osaka-Umeda area using Open Street Map, and simulated pedestrian behavior during an evacuation using Floor Field Model that incorporated our map. A large-scale earthquake is predicted to occur in the near future close to Umeda, requiring rapid evacuation from the underground. However, if all pedestrians in the underground attempt to evacuate simultaneously, congestion could occur rapidly, potentially delaying the overall evacuation process. By applying exit weighting based on pedestrian distribution, the simulation adjusts shortest paths to encourage more balanced exit usage. As a results, the number of exits used could be distributed without increasing the evacuation time.
