Reproductive biology of whip-fin silverbiddy (
The whip-fin silverbiddy (Gerres filamentosus) is a demersal fish found in coastal waters. This research aims to analyze the reproductive biology aspects of the whip-fin silverbiddy in the Muara Angke coastal waters. Sampling and analysis were conducted for six months (August 2024 to January 2025) using a gill net mesh size of 1-3 inches. The method for selecting the fish was simple random sampling, with one chosen at random from 20 regular fishers in Muara Angke waters (WPPNRI-712). Total fish analyzed in this study was 270 individuals (150 males and 120 females), ranged from 69 to 265 mm in total length. The population was male- dominated showed a sex ratio of 1.25 : 1. The size at first maturity for females was 174 mm, while for males was 192 mm. The spawning type of the fish in Muara Angke coastal waters was a partial spawner, with a higher GSI of the fish occurring in August and December. The reproductive potential of mature gonads ranged from 12,749 to 167,492 oocytes. According to the oocyte diameter, the fish was categorized as a partial spawner. Effective management efforts included reducing the fishing intensity of smaller fish using nets with a mesh size of ≥ 3 inches, and decreasing fishing in spawning areas during August and December to protect mature fish.
