Fast and accurate hosting capacity estimation via direct inversion of linear power flow models

This paper presents a novel method for estimating the hosting capacity of distribution networks, defined as the maximum generation or load that can be connected without violating operational constraints. Unlike conventional approaches that rely on nonlinear or linear programming solvers, the proposed method directly inverts a linearized power flow model, enabling fast and accurate computation without iterative optimization. Voltage and thermal constraints are evaluated separately, allowing the identification of the limiting factor at each network node. To validate the approach, simulations were performed on the IEEE 33-bus distribution network, benchmarking the proposed method against both nonlinear and linear optimal power flow models. Results show that it achieves comparable accuracy while significantly reducing computation time. These findings highlight the potential of the method for practical applications such as connection screening and hosting capacity mapping, offering a robust balance between simplicity, speed, and precision.
