Impact of communication shortage on automated traffic

Communicating automated vehicles rely on data exchange with other vehicles or infrastructure. However, communication cannot always be assumed as reliable due to technical failures, insufficient coverage, or network congestion. In this study the impact of communication failures on traffic flow is analyzed in mixed traffic environments using cellular automaton-based simulations. Different scenarios of local as well as global communication shortage are considered.

Abstract

Communicating automated vehicles rely on data exchange with other vehicles or infrastructure. However, communication cannot always be assumed as reliable due to technical failures, insufficient coverage, or network congestion. In this study the impact of communication failures on traffic flow is analyzed in mixed traffic environments using cellular automaton-based simulations. Different scenarios of local as well as global communication shortage are considered.
