Multi-objective optimization of cutting parameters for dry drilling of AISI 340 25-20 steel

The machining of stainless steels and the reduction of pollution generated by coolants and emulsions are of great importance in the industry. Several studies have been conducted to improve machinability due to challenges such as tool wear, chip formation, and cutting resistance. Additionally, compliance with strict environmental regulations has increased the cost of machining operations. This study aims to investigate the dry drilling of AISI 304 25-20 steel using a carbide insert drill. The primary objective is to optimize cutting conditions, such as cutting speed (Vc) and feed rate per revolution (f), in order to achieve low cutting power and minimal burr height. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization approach is employed to minimize both cutting power and burr height. Experiments were conducted using the design of experiments (DOE) methodology and analyzed statistically through the ANOVA method. The models provide practical recommendations for reducing production costs and improving the quality of finished products.
