Survey of Twenty-Five Women Geoscientists in the Czech Republic: How to Become a Geologist - Motivating the Next Generation

A sociological survey among female geologists was conducted in 2024.As part of the survey, twenty-five women geologists in the Czech Republic wrote a brief text about their motivation for becoming geologists, about their professional and personal achievements, and included recommendations for students, particularly female students, to help them with their decision to study geology and related fields. We conducted the survey with the aim of publishing a book about Czech women geologists, in which they could inspire young people with short and interesting life stories. The survey provided us with information on women from various geoscience fields, including paleontology, geophysics, hydrogeology, economic geology, petrology, mineralogy, geological mapping, engineering geology, geochemistry, information technology, librarianship, technical support and popularization. The respondents were of different ages, had or have diverse career paths, private lives and, of course, different personalities.Yet they all expressed their satisfaction with life in the geoscience community, and many of them expressed the opinion that the geosciences are very important for society.
