Complex Course on the Circuit: A Challenging Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Case Managed with Multidisciplinary Care
Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) is a lifesaving intervention for severe respiratory failure. We present the case of a 50-year-old patient with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who required prolonged VV ECMO support for more than 28 days. The clinical course was complicated by oxygenator failure, bilateral pneumothorax, and the need for intrahospital transport for computed tomography (CT) imaging while on ECMO, presenting significant challenges. In this case, we intend to highlight the key lessons in circuit maintenance and safe transport during ECMO, emphasizing the importance of meticulous multidisciplinary coordination.
