Searching for and crafting ‘similarity’.:Processes of micro-segregation among majority- and minority-ethnic high school students
This article examines how majority- and minority-ethnic high school students’ search for “similar” peers drives social and ethnic micro-segregation within the ostensibly egalitarian Danish school system. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a diverse Copenhagen high school, it traces how students recognize, craft and enact “similarity” in social interactions guided by a tacit ethno-racialized divide, classed and ethnic distinctions made salient in the high school context, and their search for recognition, safety, and social appeal.
