POTENTIAL OF AGRICULTURAL AND FOREST LIGNOCELLULOSIC RESIDUES FOR BIOENERGY IN BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA
Bauchi State, located in northeastern Nigeria and characterized by Sudan and Sahel savannah vegetation zones, possesses abundant agricultural and woody biomass resources that can serve as lignocellulosic feedstocks for bioenergy production. This study evaluates the availability and potential of major lignocellulosic materials in the state, including crop residues and savannah woody biomass, to support sustainable bioenergy development. Biomass quantities were estimated using agricultural production data and standard residue-to-product ratios, while energy potentials were derived from typical calorific values. The findings indicate that Bauchi State has significant lignocellulosic biomass resources capable of supporting electricity generation, heat production, and biofuel production. Harnessing these resources could reduce reliance on fossil fuels, enhance rural energy access, and contribute to environmental sustainability. The study concludes that Bauchi State holds strong prospects for lignocellulosic-based bioenergy development, provided that appropriate technologies and supportive policies are implemented
