Dynamic power allocation for rate optimization in vehicular reliable and low‐latency optical camera communications

Summary Optical camera communication (OCC) has emerged as a key technology enabling the seamless operation of future autonomous vehicles. By utilizing its superior capabilities, we can fulfill the requirements of reliable and low‐latency (RLL) communication in vehicular networks. This paper proposes an approach to rate optimization in vehicular OCC by optimally allocating transmit power while meeting the RLL requirements. First, we formulate a rate optimization problem with discrete modulation schemes, considering the average transmit power and RLL constraints. We then transform the discrete‐rate problem into a continuous‐rate optimization model to simplify the solution process. To solve this problem, an algorithm that combines Lagrangian relaxation and the bisection method is proposed. The impact of the proposed joint power allocation and rate optimization scheme on the average rate and latency for different bit error rates (BERs) is evaluated through simulations. The findings show that when targeting BERs of 10 −4 and 10 −5 and maintaining a latency of 10 ms, a higher transmit power allocation results in better average rate and latency performance.
