Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Nurses Toward the Hospital Corneal Retrieval Program at a Tertiary Hospital in Indonesia: Barriers and Opportunities

Purpose: Corneal blindness remains a major public health challenge, with donor shortages limiting treatment. The Hospital Corneal Retrieval Program relies heavily on nurses, who play pivotal roles in patient care and donor advocacy. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses toward corneal donation at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM), Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October and December 2022 among 422 nurses from diverse hospital units in RSCM. A validated questionnaire captured demographic data and knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to corneal donation. Statistical analyses included χ 2 , Fisher exact test, and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Among the 422 respondents, 55.4% had poor knowledge, 50.2% demonstrated positive attitudes, and 59.5% reported good practices ( P < 0.001 for both). Regression analysis identified younger age (≤36 years), good knowledge, and positive attitudes as predictors of good practice. Despite engagement in information dissemination and training participation, only 12.3% of nurses expressed willingness to donate their own corneas. Conclusions: Nurses at RSCM demonstrate promising attitudes and practices but insufficient knowledge regarding corneal donation. Targeted education interventions, role clarification, and culturally sensitive corneal donation training are essential to strengthen their involvement in the Hospital Corneal Retrieval Program and enhance corneal donation in Indonesia.
