Redefining Identity and Reshaping Roles: The Lived Experiences of Filipino Teenage Fathers amid Familial Transitions

Teenage fatherhood represents a complicated and life-altering transition that pushes young men to balance their personal growth with unexpected parenting duties, frequently amid social stigma and insufficient support. This qualitative phenomenological research investigated the lived experiences of Filipino teenage fathers, emphasizing how they manage family and personal transitions, their goals as new parents, and the support systems essential for promoting successful adaptation. Using purposive sampling, five teenage fathers aged 19 years and below were selected, and data were gathered through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step method. The findings revealed two overarching domains. First, the navigational journey into fatherhood is marked by emotional and psychological adaptation, shifting familial and social roles, and evolving identity shaped by both stigma and validation. Secondly, teenage fathers shared ambitions centered on self-improvement, completing their education, obtaining stable employment, and wanting to provide emotional and financial backing to their children, defying stereotypes and redefining young fatherhood through committed, positive parenting. The study informs crucial insights for support systems, highlighting the influence of social acceptance, structural challenges like financial strain and educational disruption, and the critical importance of help from family and partners. This study contributes to the growing dialogue on fatherhood transformations by offering both insights and practical support for enabling teenage fathers to attain role proficiency, resilience, and sustained well-being.
