Taal aan de Marges: Meertalige Gezondheidszorgbeleid, Inclusie en Structurele Barrières voor Migrantengemeenschappen in Brussel

Project Overview This joint doctoral project, hosted by KU Leuven, aims to analyze and enhance translation policies and practices to improve communication, access, and inclusion for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in Brussels. The study will investigate current translation provisions in public services; explore how translation policies are formulated and enacted; map out the dissemination of translations; and assess the roles and attitudes of stakeholders. A detailed analysis will be conducted on the Moroccan community, using the COVID-19 crisis as a case study to explore language policy impacts. The research will evaluate the effectiveness of current translation policies in building trust and promoting inclusion among CALD communities. Comparisons will be made with Melbourne, supported by a research year at the University of Melbourne. General Objective This project will develop guidelines for effective translation policies to enhance communication, access, and inclusion for CALD communities in multilingual urban settings. Research Questions - Translation Management: What are the existing policies, laws and regulations related to translation of non-official languages? - Translation Practices: What are the current practices for non-official language mediation? - Translation Beliefs: What are stakeholders' attitudes and beliefs about translation of non-official languages, and how do they perceive the role of trust? - Alignment and Discrepancies: How do management, practices, and beliefs regarding non-official languages align or differ, and what are the barriers and enablers? - Linguistic Inclusivity: How do management, practices and beliefs address linguistic inclusion and promote participation and trust? - Policy Recommendations: How can public information and services be made more accessible for CALD communities, and what institutional changes are needed?
