Epidemiología de la cardiopatía isquémica en la mujer

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, contributing to loss of health and life expectancy, and increasing costs of the healthcare system.A significant portion of this burden falls on low-and middle-income countries such as Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, and some countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, with age-adjusted standardized mortality of 316 to 486 per 100,000 inhabitants. 1 The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 80% of all cardiovascular deaths occur in these regions of the world. In recent decades, Latin America has presented relevant changes in its economy, urbanization and industrialization, and the phenomenon of globalization has modified the lifestyles of its inhabitants. These changes, together with the demographic transition, have promoted an epidemic of CVD and coronary heart disease (CHD) in the region.
