A Study on the Application of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Korean Flight Education

This paper proposes integrating the universal design for learning (UDL) framework into flight training to address the critical global and domestic pilot shortage. Current systems in Korea suffer from high trainee attrition due to rigid, instructor-centric methods that neglect diverse learning needs and increase cognitive load. Our proposed UDL-based model, incorporating cognitive load theory (CLT) and advanced VR/AI simulation, optimizes learning by providing multiple means of representation, action/expression, and engagement. This approach aims to reduce extraneous cognitive load, foster germane cognitive load, and boost trainee motivation and self-regulation. The study outlines a comprehensive roadmap for curriculum integration, instructor development, and pedagogical evaluation. This research offers a novel model for high-stakes aviation training, promising reduced attrition, enhanced learning efficiency, and the development of adaptable pilots, alongside policy recommendations for national UDL integration in aviation education.
