Advancing Sustainable Icebreaking Alternative Fuels and Operational Efficiency for a Northern Baltic Sea Case (OMAE 2025 Conference Presentation)

This presentation analyses alternative fuel options and operational efficiency for icebreaking services in the Northern Baltic Sea using a system-level winter navigation simulation approach. It evaluates fuel consumption, operational performance, and cost implications under different winter severity scenarios, with a particular focus on methanol as a potential alternative to marine diesel oil. The results indicate that methanol is technically feasible for icebreaking operations due to its compatibility with modified marine engines and reduced emissions, while its economic viability depends on fuel prices, policy incentives, and supply chain development. The presentation was delivered at the OMAE 2025 Conference.

Abstract

This presentation analyses alternative fuel options and operational efficiency for icebreaking services in the Northern Baltic Sea using a system-level winter navigation simulation approach. It evaluates fuel consumption, operational performance, and cost implications under different winter severity scenarios, with a particular focus on methanol as a potential alternative to marine diesel oil. The results indicate that methanol is technically feasible for icebreaking operations due to its compatibility with modified marine engines and reduced emissions, while its economic viability depends on fuel prices, policy incentives, and supply chain development.
