Optimizing passive strategies for eco-residential energy efficiency in China's hot summer/cold winter zone: A Yancheng case study

This research evaluated the energy efficiency of an advanced eco-residential design in Yancheng, China, utilizing dynamic simulations with EnergyPlus and OpenStudio. The study focused on transitional climates marked by hot summers and cold winters, comparing three residential models: an innovative eco-residence with expansive terraces and high window-to-wall ratios (WWR), a modified version without terraces, and a conventional design with enclosed balconies. The findings indicate that heating is the main contributor to annual energy consumption (62.93 kWh/m2) in Yancheng due to extended winter demands. The eco-residential design successfully reduced summer cooling energy by 5.3% through terrace shading but experienced an 11.85% increase in winter heating consumption, resulting in a 0.53% rise in total annual energy use compared to traditional designs. Traditional residences, with a lower WWR (41.32% south-facing) and enclosed balconies, demonstrated 8.14% less energy consumption per unit area but required 9.44% more floor space. Regional climate comparisons revealed significant differences in energy consumption patterns. Key energy-saving strategies include optimizing building orientation, reducing the WWR, enhancing insulation, and employing triple-glazed argon-filled windows. Implementing these strategies led to energy savings of up to 31.08%, aligning architectural innovation with China's dual-carbon goals. This study provides valuable insights for designing climate-responsive residential buildings in transitional regions, balancing energy efficiency with sustainable urban development.
