Minimum-redundancy linear optical phased arrays for fixed-wavelength 2D beam steering with enhanced grating-lobe suppression
We propose and simulate a minimum-redundancy linear optical phased array (OPA) for two-dimensional (2D) beam steering at a fixed wavelength of 1550 nm. The design achieves continuous steering over a range of 7.7 ∘ in the longitudinal direction and 8.8 ∘ in the transverse direction. To suppress far-field grating lobes, the antennas are arranged in a custom minimum-redundancy configuration, optimized for a 3 µm inter-element spacing. Grating lobe suppression ratios of −7.76dB, −6.45dB, and −3.69dB are measured during transverse beam direction for inter-element phase shifts of 0, 0.2 π , and 0.4 π , respectively. The total power consumption is 60 mW for longitudinal steering and 4.76 mW for transverse steering. The proposed architecture offers a compact and power-efficient solution for fixed-wavelength 2D beam steering, suitable for integrated photonic applications.
