NAD⁺ Injections and "NAD Boosters": Public Health Risks, Adverse Effects, and Regulatory Implications in the Context of Rapid Consumer Adoption

This commentary provides a critical public-health analysis of the rapid consumer adoption of NAD⁺ injections, infusions, and so-called “NAD boosters” (including nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide). Drawing on current clinical evidence, safety data, regulatory analyses, and public-health literature, the article examines documented adverse effects, long-term safety uncertainties, risks associated with low-quality and adulterated supplements, and the role of health misinformation in driving inappropriate use. Particular attention is given to downstream impacts on public-health systems, including avoidable adverse events, behavioural displacement from evidence-based prevention, and increased healthcare utilisation. The commentary argues that, in the absence of demonstrated clinical benefit on patient-important outcomes, current population-level use of NAD⁺ interventions represents a preventable public-health risk and warrants precautionary regulatory and policy action.
