Broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment reshapes the gut microbiome, resistome, and colonization potential of opportunistic pathogens: a metagenomics study
Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota and alterations in the resistome were detected in antibiotic-treated patients. Notably, the opportunistic pathogens E. faecium and E. coli were enriched in antibiotic-treated individuals, suggesting that broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy may facilitate their proliferation and colonization, thereby contributing to dysbiosis-related complications. These findings warrant validation in larger cohorts to better elucidate the dynamics of antibiotic-induced dysbiosis and the dissemination of resistance genes.
