Correlations Between Social Vulnerability and the Development of Linguistic Competencies/Correlações entre Vulnerabilidade Social e o Desenvolvimento de Competências Linguísticas

This study investigates the correlation between social vulnerability and the development of linguistic competencies in students aged 9 to 15. Drawing on participant observation conducted between 2022 and 2024 during a teaching internship in a public school, the research identifies recurring difficulties in syntactic construction, phonological processing, and prosodic decoding among students from unstable family environments. The analysis is grounded in neurobiological frameworks, specifically Choi et al. (2009) on the effects of verbal abuse on white matter tracts and Mason (2014) on the right hemisphere’s role in prosody. The study hypothesizes that chronic environmental stress may compromise neural pathways essential for language, such as the arcuate fasciculus. These findings suggest that linguistic underperformance in vulnerable contexts has a neurocognitive substrate, highlighting the need for pedagogical strategies that prioritize emotional security to foster neuroplasticity. Keywords: Social vulnerability, linguistic development, neurobiology of language, arcuate fasciculus, prosody. ______ Este estudo investiga a correlação entre a vulnerabilidade social e o desenvolvimento de competências linguísticas em estudantes de 9 a 15 anos. Abstract
