An Evaluation of the Archaeological Data in Yenigüler Village, Ayancık, Sinop
Yenigüler is a small village located in the Ayancık District of Sinop. In September 2024, government authorities undertook road construction and widening efforts within the forested area along the Ayancık route to facilitate the repair of electrical lines and large metal poles. During these operations, various architectural blocks and stone fragments belonging to architectural structures were unearthed in the Arkayüz locality, within the Kıran settlement, situated within the village's boundaries. In the examination conducted in the area, numerous fragments of roof tiles, brick fragments, ceramoplastic decorated ware, a sundial, and building stones from the Roman and Byzantine periods were observed on the soil's surface. The emergence of remnants from the Roman and Byzantine periods on the soil surface during the road widening works accelerated illegal excavation activities. By identifying and dating the artifacts discovered in the settlement area, which is being rapidly destroyed by treasure hunters every day, based on current data, an effort has been made to contribute to the region's history.
