Our Department’s Comprehensive Approach to Laryngological Science
Breathing, phonation, and swallowing are fundamental laryngeal functions indispensable for maintaining human dignity and quality of life. Impairment of these functions can profoundly impact the quality of life. Laryngological science is an interdisciplinary field encompassing basic and clinical domains, targeting the larynx, the organ responsible for vital functions. The scope includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, voice, and swallowing at the basic level and clinical conditions, such as congenital anomalies, inflammatory diseases, cystic lesions, and tumors. Surgical intervention for vocal fold paralysis, swallowing disorders, airway stenosis, and laryngeal cancer requires expertise from otolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons. Our department actively engages in the clinical management of laryngeal disorders and research in laryngology, including the development of functional electrical stimulation therapy for vocal fold paralysis and investigations of laryngeal allergy. In this presentation at Symposium 2 of the 37th Annual Meeting of the Japan Laryngological Association, we outline our department’s clinical practices, research initiatives, and regional collaboration systems in laryngology, and discuss future challenges and prospects for “expanding the horizons of laryngological science.”
