Oscillatory Oxidation of Hydrogen in the Presence of Sulfur Dioxide

We have studied oscillatory oxidation of hydrogen in the presence of sulfur dioxide. The process has been shown to follow a degenerate chain mechanism, with sulfur monoxide (SO), a primary sulfur dioxide conversion product, playing an important role in it. It has been shown that, under certain conditions (pressure, temperature, gas mixture composition, and contact time), the oxidation of hydrogen in the presence of sulfur dioxide in the self-ignition region proceeds in explosive mode and is accompanied by light emission. Comparison of experimental data on the oxidation of hydrogen in the presence of sulfur dioxide with simulation results obtained in a proposed model of the process studied has shown good agreement. The calculated effective activation energy for the oxidation reaction is 9200 J/mol.
