Optimal VWAP Execution: A Synthesis of Stochastic Control, Forecasting, and Adaptive Trading
The Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) execution strategy serves as a fundamental benchmark and risk-aware tactical tool in institutional trading. Its design integrates continuous-time stochastic control, microstructure-aware volume forecasting, and adaptive optimization within a low-latency, closed-loop architecture. This paper synthesizes contemporary advances in VWAP systems, examining mathematical formulations—from the Almgren-Chriss framework and CARA utility maximization to dynamic programming and reinforcement learning—alongside volume prediction techniques ranging from component-based models (CMEM, SPAR) to machine learning and transformer-based approaches. Emphasis is placed on the coherent coupling of forecasting, scheduling, and execution layers, with practical discussion on implementation in live production environments under stochastic liquidity and evolving market regimes.
