Development and Validation of an Accurate Eye Model for Capacitive Eye Tracking

A feasibility study of a contactless eye tracking solution based on capacitive sensing is presented. It targets a seamless application in smart glasses for daily use, characterized by a strict trade-off between performance in tracking eye movements and power consumption. In order to optimize the size, number and location of the sensing electrodes, to be integrated in the glasses, reliable numerical simulations are needed. Thus, an accurate COMSOL electric model of the eye was developed, improved and tuned until the predicted signals matched the experimental measurements performed with both time-based and frequency-based approaches offering sub-fF resolution. This optimization process is here reported, along with preliminary results showing the feasibility of capacitive eye tracking.
