Rethinking Hans Döllgast
The German architect Hans Dllgast died over 50 years ago.To mark the 50th anniversary of his death, the Archive of the Architekturmuseum der TUM and the Chair of Architectural Design and Conception at TUM, in collaboration with the Bayerische Akademie der Schnen Knste, invited an international group of speakers to the International Hans Dllgast Days in 2024.The aim of this event was, on the one hand, to pay tribute to a university teacher who inf luenced generations of architects. On the other, it was to raise awareness of how relevant Dllgast's work is for the present day.At the conference, experts of his work as well as practising and teaching architects examined what lessons we can learn from him today.Their lectures were complemented by the presentation of original drawings and archival materials in the Architecture Museum's archive, followed by guided tours of the Alte Pinakothek, St. Bonifaz and the Alte Sdfriedhof (Old South Cemetery). In this way, the programme offered a comprehensive approach to the architect's life and work. The present collection brings together these lectures with further essays selected from the submissions received in response to the call for papers.Five decades after Hans Dllgast's death, his work is yet to be researched in its full breadth.Dllgast's masterpieces, the reconstruction of the Alte Pinakothek and his rescue of other important monuments in Munich such as St. Bonifaz, Allerheiligen-Hof kirche, and the Alte Sdfriedhof -have found recognition in public perception and architectural historiography, but his other works, both diverse and remarkable, have not yet been fully examined. His varied writings provide a valuable key to understanding his work and are given critical attention in this volume.
