Enhanced mechanical, electrical properties and arc erosion resistance of CuW electrical contact materials by incorporation of in-situ formed graphene

To solve the problems of W-phase agglomeration and arc instability of Cu–W contacts during electrical contact, Gr@Cu30W composites were prepared via in-situ growth and powder metallurgy. The arc erosion resistance mechanism of the composites was investigated through electrical contact testing. Results indicated that a typical ''Cu–W-Gr'' sandwich structure had formed via the hot extrusion and the in-situ Gr incorporation processes. This structure effectively pinned the Cu–W interface, improved electrical conductivity, and promoted arc transfer and extinction, thereby enhancd arc erosion resistance. Furthermore, Gr on the contact surface acted as a protective layer, mitigated the arc erosion damage to the matrix and improved stability during arc generation and extinction.
