Strict father, kind mother? Effects of congruent and incongruent parental emotional warmth on academic procrastination

Academic procrastination is a prevalent maladaptive behavior among adolescents, particularly in high-stakes educational environments where family dynamics play a critical predictive role. This research seeks to investigate the reasons and mechanisms through which parents' emotional warmth influences academic procrastination, with a specific focus on family dynamics that include both parents and their children. Drawing on conservation of resources theory while challenging the traditional Chinese belief of "Strict Father, Kind Mother (a traditional parenting style characterized by paternal strictness and maternal warmth)," it investigates how congruent and incongruent parental emotional warmth influences academic procrastination, with psychological availability serving as the mediating factor. Data were obtained from 692 students and their parents in 14 Chinese high schools at three separate time intervals. This study used polynomial regression analysis and response surface methodology for data analysis. As hypothesized, congruent high levels of maternal and paternal emotional warmth enhanced students' psychological availability and reduced academic procrastination. Conversely, psychological availability diminished, and procrastination increased when parents displayed greater divergence in emotional warmth. This study highlights the essential influence of balanced parental warmth in cultivating constructive academic behaviors and suggest implications for family-based interventions to mitigate procrastination.
