A Roadmap Towards a Sustainable Soil Information System for Nigeria
This SIS development report outlines the strategic steps for building and strengthening Nigeria’s Soil Information System (NiSIS) to enhance agricultural productivity, soil health, and informed decision-making for sustainable soil management. It builds on insights from the “Nigeria Soil Information System Development Workshop” held in October 2025 in Abuja, Nigeria, hosted by the Regional Hub for Fertiliser and Soil Health for West Africa and the Sahel, IITA Nigeria and ISRIC-World Soil Information. Participants from various sectors addressed common data and capacity challenges and discussed long-term financial sustainability options for NiSIS. The workshop reviewed six components thought to be crucial for NiSIS's success: 1) Understanding of current SIS status, 2) Exploring FAIR data compliance and governance, 3) Exploring technical options for sustainable operation, 4) Identifying ways of strategic planning for long-term NiSIS, 5) Exploring standardized SOPs, and 6) Agreeing on next steps for the development of the SIS. The roadmap includes an overview of each component, addressing available information, gaps, and recommendations, which are optional for the NiSIS project team to consider.
