Empirical analysis of green lean six sigma enablers for the construction sector: an Indian perspective

Purpose In addition to consuming a lot of resources and producing a lot of waste, the construction sector is accountable for more than 20% of global emissions. Hence, this study aims to objectively identify and rank the most important enablers of Green Lean Six Sigma (GLSS) adoption in the Indian construction sector, in line with the government’s increasing interest in sustainable practices. Design/methodology/approach After a thorough literature review, 14 crucial enablers of GLSS implementation were found and confirmed by experts in the field. These enablers were ranked according to their relative importance using the Best Worst Method, a multi-criteria decision-making technique. Findings According to this study, “Top management commitment towards green initiatives” is the most important enabler facilitating the successful implementation of GLSS in the Indian construction sector. The priority enablers are in line with findings from comparable global contexts and show a solid alignment with expert opinion in India. Originality/value The enablers for GLSS implementation in the Indian construction industry have never been assessed and prioritized till now. It identifies the most important elements required to promote environmental sustainability and operational excellence in construction projects, providing useful advice for practitioners, policymakers and project managers.
