Unreal Engine 5: Analysis for Third-Person Game Development

Unreal Engine 5 (UE5), developed by Epic Games, represents one of the most significant advancements in real-time rendering engines and interactive application frameworks to date. By introducing technologies such as Nanite virtualized geometry, Lumen fully dynamic global illumination, World Partition, Chaos physics, MetaSounds, Control Rig, and enhanced animation pipelines, UE5 redefines the workflow and technical boundaries of modern game development. This paper presents an extensive and systematic technical study of Unreal Engine 5 with a strong emphasis on its application in large-scale third-person game development. The study explores engine architecture, rendering pipelines, lighting systems, animation and physics subsystems, gameplay frameworks, world streaming mechanisms, development workflows, optimization strategies, and experimental performance evaluation. A fully functional third-person prototypeis implemented to assess scalability, visual realism, runtime efficiency, and developer productivity. The results demonstrate that Unreal Engine 5 effectively bridges the gap between cinematicquality visuals and real-time interactivity, establishing it asa powerful platform for academic research, industrial game production, simulation, and virtual environments.Index Terms—Unreal Engine 5, Third-Person Games, Nanite, Lumen, World Partition, Chaos Physics, Game Engine Architecture, Real-Time Rendering.
