Modular and Multifunctional Phononic-Crystal Platform for Route Reconfiguration and Information Demodulation

Phononic crystal (PC) platforms have significant potential for controlling acoustic waves to achieve different functionalities. However, the flexible tuning of PC parameters to enable multiple functionalities on a single platform remains a challenge. In this paper, a modular and multifunctional PCs platform with convenient disassembly and reassembly of hybrid magnetic cells is proposed. Signal processing of the acoustic field with a compressed sensing framework is combined with the proposed PC platform to enable multiple functionalities. First, unlike single-frequency wave manipulation in traditional PCs, multiple propagation routes of multi-frequency waves are simultaneously controlled and reconfigured without crosstalk. Second, the number of wireless acoustic communication channels is increased with a single receiver through the design of PC anisotropy. Third, information encoding and decoding are achieved with high accuracy in a solid medium. We demonstrate that the customization of PC parameters and their combination with compressed sensing framework can improve performance in these functionalities. This paper presents a new perspective for designing a tunable PC platform with modular magnetic cells, and may aid future investigations into more platform functionalities compatible with advanced data processing algorithms.
