Cultural Heritage Digitization as a Strategic Tool: Potentials and Pitfalls for Destination Image Formation and Tourism Branding

Cultural heritage digitization has become an influential tool in shaping how destinations are presented and experienced in global tourism. This critical essay examines cultural heritage digitization as a strategic tool for destination image formation and tourism branding, exploring its dual function as both an opportunity and a challenge for cultural and tourism stakeholders worldwide. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives stemming from destination image, tourism branding, and digital heritage theories, the paper evaluates the potential of digitization in enhancing accessibility, fostering global visibility, and expanding the discourse that shapes destination image. At the same time, it underscores the pitfalls associated with digital mediation, including the risks of commodification, selective representation, and the risks of affecting cultural authenticity. The analysis situates digitization within broader debates on power, ownership, and community participation, raising questions about whose stories are reinforced and whose voices are marginalized in digital heritage projects. Through a critical approach, the essay argues that while digital heritage initiatives can enrich tourism branding by promoting inclusivity and innovation, they can also bring ethical and socio-cultural issues that demand careful investigation. The discussion concludes by emphasizing the need for balanced strategies that align technological tools with cultural sensitivity, ensuring that digitization contributes to sustainable tourism development without harming heritage's main traditional functions.
