TransformED Futures: Towards Human-Centred, Ethical and Inclusive Use and Governance of AI in Higher Education

The exponential growth and rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools brought into sharp focus the need for a robust, ethical, and human-centred framework to govern its use and application. For higher education, the need for such a framework could not be stressed enough. Currently, universities are not equipped with adequate digital infrastructure and expertise to adapt, regulate and exploit this new technology. Moreover, the lack of clear policies on the use of generative AI confronts universities with more challenges rather than providing solutions, which is initially the premise of AI. In the paper, I seek to provide critical reflections on the implications of AI on higher education and the need for an inclusive, ethical, and human-centred approach to its regulation. Furthermore, I propose a four-step roadmap for ethical governance and what that entails for universities of the future.
