Information Cocoon and Citizens' Political Support: Evidence From China

Abstract The rapid development of social media platforms and digital technology has expanded individuals' access to information, but it has also contributed to the emergence of information cocoons. This study investigates the impact of information cocoons in the context of China, with a particular focus on their influence on political support. The findings reveal a dual effect: information cocoons can directly diminish citizens' political support, while also strengthening the positive relationship between authority-oriented attitudes and political support. These results suggest that strategies to address the challenges posed by information cocoons should emphasize enhancing civic awareness and promoting critical engagement in information consumption.
