The contribution made by geographic information technologies to education for sustainable development: the case of story maps
The boom in the use of Geographic Information Technologies (GITs) in the educational sphere, due both to their value as a didactic resource and their potential as a pedagogical strategy, has significantly transformed geography teaching in recent years. Tools such as story maps, which make it easier to access and interpret geographic information, have created new teaching strategies and scenarios, which are particularly effective for teaching and learning fundamental concepts in geographic education today, such as sustainable development and climate change. The aim of this research is to analyse the potential applications of story maps in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) that can en-hance interactive learning and help develop spatial skills for problem-solving. To this end, we carry out a review of the bibliography in order to analyse the current role of story maps in geographic education in general and in ESD in particular. We then explore in greater depth the latest tendencies regarding their application in ESD, before going on to offer some final reflections and proposals on this issue. Our review highlights that although story maps have great potential as a teaching resource, in the ESD field there is significant room for im-provement as regards the best ways to use them to maximum advantage. It is vital to improve teacher training on this question so as to enable the generalized, widespread implementation of story maps at all the different levels of the educational system.
