JEAN VĂLEANU – RECOVERING THE MEMORY OF A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTOR TO THE ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE OF THE CAPITAL

This monograph presents a comprehensive study of the architectural and artistic work of Jean Văleanu (1904–1994), emphasizing his contribution to the Art Deco heritage of Bucharest during the interwar and early postwar periods. Through systematic archival research—including municipal archives, libraries, photographic collections, and period newspapers—over thirty residential and leisure buildings were identified and analyzed, revealing Văleanu’s versatility in responding to complex urban parcels, stylistic regulations, and emerging technologies of the 1930s. His architectural oeuvre demonstrates a nuanced engagement with mature Art Deco, Streamline, and International Style tendencies, while integrating functional innovations such as optimized ventilation, lighting, and thermal comfort. Parallel to his architectural career, Văleanu pursued a lifelong practice in the visual arts, evolving from figurative landscapes and still lifes to abstract series—Masks and Structures—produced primarily in Paris from the 1980s onward. The study highlights the interplay between Văleanu’s architecture and plastic art, as well as the collaborative influence of his wife, Stela Văleanu, in glass and enamel works. Contextualized within socio-political constraints, including antisemitism and emigration, this research reconstructs Văleanu’s professional trajectory and underscores his dual legacy in Romanian architecture and fine arts. The monograph contributes to the historiography of Bucharest’s built environment, Art Deco architecture, and the recognition of overlooked creative figures in national cultural memory.
